Kirkmichael farm in new government initiative

A CARRICK smallholding has been earmarked to help foster a new era of talented young farmers.

Glenside Farm, two miles east of Kirkmichael, was last month announced as one of two new ‘starter farms’ intended to ease young farmers into the industry.

Scottish rural affairs secretary Richard Lochhead MSP revealed plans for the North Carrick site in a speech to the NFU Scotland conference in St Andrews on Tuesday February 12.

Now seeking applications for opportunities at Glenside and Rynaclach, near Aberfoyle, the Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS) is offering new entrants a 10-year Limited Duration Tenancy agreement to enable them to gain valuable experience in managing their own farm business on a part-time basis before moving on to larger scale operations.

FCS Agricultural Advisor Robin Waddell said he was confident of a high calibre of applicants.

The two latest additions to the project join two Dumfriesshire and one Aberdeenshire site with tenants due to begin work in April.
