Kirkmichael kids can’t wait for new school

PUPILS in Kirkmichael are looking forward to seeing their brand new school taking shape as work begins on the £2.3million project.
Funded by South Ayrshire Council and to include landscaped external areas, assembly and dining areas, changing facilities, and nursery accommodation, the new primary school will be built on the site of the demolished 1970s school building on Woodside Avenue.
The new school will also include a lifelong learning facility - accessed via a secure, controlled area - and available for local people to use at any time.
In the meantime pupils and staff from the school have been decanted to the village’s McCosh Hall in nearby Patna Road, where they will remain until the new school is completed in October.
The children of Kirkmichael said they had high hopes for their new place of learning.
P5’s Craig Hodge is hoping for big classrooms, while P6’s Katie Bryan and Aimee Gardner are looking forward to new furniture and supplies, and new computers to help with their work.
For P2 pupils Marah Muir and Amy Hodge it was all about playtimes spent exploring the school’s new playground, and their classmate Kori Mullen said: “I can’t wait because there is going to be a big playground and the school will look different.”
Councillor Margaret Toner, lifelong learning portfolio holder for South Ayrshire Council, cut the first sod at the school’s groundbreaking ceremony.
She said the new Kirkmichael Primary - to be completed less than a year after the Colmonell Primary School - clearly demonstrates the council’s commitment to rural education.
“The new facilities within the school will be of great benefit when delivering education through the Curriculum for Excellence, which provides a coherent, more flexible and enriched curriculum for pupils,” she said. “The new school building will be fit for the 21st century.”
