Labour voice fears over local service jobs

THE Labour Group on South Ayrshire Council has voiced fears over what is essentially the privatisation of the council’s direct labour service.

A report to the council has recommended the adoption of an in-house team for planned maintenance and responsive repairs, but goes on to say that the council may wish to consider outsourcing the entire service in two to three years time. Labour group leader Councillor John McDowall said: “We would be opposed to any privatisation of our direct labour workforce.

“The priority over the next few years until the economy starts to recover must be to protect and create as many local jobs as possible, particularly in construction trades such as plumbers, joiners, electricians and so on.
