The Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools arrived in South Ayrshire this week for a special visit to Girvan Academy and Dalmilling primary school.

Now in its second year, the National Galleries of Scotland, directly supported by Tesco Bank, is beginning the first of a two-part tour of schools around the country to promote the magic of visual art

In Girvan, both S2 classes at the South Ayrshire school enjoyed creative workshops developed to raise awareness of the national collection and teach children new skills.

Working with print making materials they created their very own costume designs inspired by two artworks: John Byrne Self Portrait and Toulouse Lautrec’s Jane Avril.

At Dalmilling, primary five and five/six classes at the South Ayrshire school enjoyed creative workshops developed to raise awareness of the national collection and teach children new skills. Working with print making materials they created their own artworks inspired by the Benjamin West painting Death of a Stag.

The Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools is Scotland’s biggest national art competition. Over 6,200 children across almost every local authority in Scotland took part in 2012 and, with a mission to continue to widen accessibility to art, skills, understanding and fun, that number is set to rise.

Linda McClelland, Playfair Co-ordinator at National Galleries of Scotland said: “The Tesco Bank Art Competition for School workshops have been devised with the Curriculum for Excellence in mind and provide an inspirational starting point for the competition. We are grateful to Tesco Bank for their support in helping us to take the competition and workshops out into communities.”

Councillor Margaret Toner, South Ayrshire Council’s Portfolio Holder for Lifelong Learning added: “We were delighted to welcome the Tesco Bank art competition for schools roadshow to South Ayrshire, where the pupils enjoyed a very special and inspiring day.

“This creative initiative is educational and fun and I’m sure it will encourage many of our children to go on to develop a lifelong interest in the arts.”

Adele Mills, Community Investment Manager at Tesco Bank added: “Tesco Bank is delighted to continue to support the Art Competition and roadshow. We are sure it will give more children across the country the opportunity to participate in, and gain access to, the positive experiences of art.

“This competition, along with our other programmes in sport and reading, is part of our ongoing commitment to the development of young people in the communities across Scotland.”
