Maybole to welcome celebrated musician

MAYBOLE’S musical acclaim is to take a step into the limelight with a nationally-renowned fiddle player confirmed to perform in the Carrick town this summer.
Well-known for it’s Town Hall concert venue and popular Pipe Band, Maybole already has an impressive musical reputation.
But earlier this month it’s strings-stature grew in stance when award-winning fiddle star Jenna Reid announced her first ever Fiddle Day - to be held in the Carrick Centre.
Glasgow-based Jenna has performed with some of the top names in Scottish traditional music and is a member of bands Filska, Dochas, Deaf Shepherd, and Blazin’ Fiddles.
Now in the eighth year of her established solo career her third album, Morning Moon, was released in 2012, and she reprised her Shetland Bus set at Celtic Connections this month.
But despite her career success Jenna said it was her teaching work that inspired the Fiddle Day, which she hopes will leave a lasting musical legacy for Maybole.
She said the Carrick venue for her inaugural event was an easy one to make. Having visited the town many a time - Maybole is home to Jenna’s granny, and her mother called it home before her parents moved to Shetland more than 30 years ago - she said the town’s peaceful surroundings offer the perfect location for musical exploration.
“It was the obvious location for me because it is like a second home, and being in a rural setting is nice and relaxing and offers a nice atmosphere,” she said.
The Fiddle Day, which will take place on August 31, will feature intermediate and advanced classes with Jenna herself, as well as an evening acoustic concert with acclaimed Edinburgh jazz and folk guitarist Kevin Mackenzie.
Jenna’s sister Bethany, a fellow musician and composer, will also lead a class, and the day’s programme will feature the launch of Jenna’s first book: a collection of all the tunes she has written to date.
Jenna said of the event: “It will encapsulate all the things I do in my work in one day and in a nice, cosy Ayrshire setting.”
Hugh Paterson, Carrick Centre Chairman of the Board, said: “We at the Carrick Centre are delighted that Jenna has chosen us as the first venue for her fiddling masterclasses,” he said.
“This new venture adds another “string to the Centre’s bow” as we move to widen the appeal of the place for community groups.”

Tickets for the concert will be available on the door. All Fiddle Day events will take place within the Carrick Centre, Culzean Road, Maybole.
