Model opportunity to showcase Carrick

Carrick’s rail link has rolled into the fore with promotion at one of the country’s largest railway exhibitions.

Community rail partnership Saylsa, which promotes the Girvan to Stranraer railway line, was represented for the fifth consecutive year last week at the Model Rail Exhibition held at Glasgow’s SECC.

The exhibition, which runs annually for three days, attracts thousands of visitors and is a great opportunity to showcase Carrick and Dumfries and Galloway’s scenic 60-mile rail link to people who enjoy railways.

Michael Liebisch, Saylsa’s Membership and Stakeholder Secretary, said: “We had a lot of interest from people who hadn’t visited the area who were keen to ensure the rail link does not disappear. Our popular cycle, walk and line guides were also in heavy demand.

“Many commented that it was strange, given the environmental, time and cost benefits rail brings, that an arrangement to bus people to and from the new ferry port seemed contrary to Scottish Government policy. However, they were heartened that opportunities may arise for re-opening some of the closed stations.”

Representatives from SAYLSA recently attended the Scottish Government’s conference on community rail, which emphasised the desire for community-driven organisations to become designated Scottish Community Rail Partnerships (SCRPs).

Saylsa have held many discussions and meetings with local stakeholders and have already submitted their application to become one of the first designated SCRPs in Scotland to the two Regional Transport Partnerships.
