MSP welcomes medicines fund

A CARRICK MSP has welcomed plans to fund rare conditions medicines, claiming the current system does not always work.

Adam Ingram MSP said he was pleased to hear the Scottish Government announce the launch of a £21million Rare Conditions Medicines Fund to cover the cost of medicines not available for routine prescription for patients with rare conditions.

Mr Ingram, SNP MSP for Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley, said this builds on recent evidence heard by the Health and Sport Committee that the current system does not always work for a very small number of patients.

“This is very good news from the Scottish Government,” he said. “They have moved quickly to act on interim advice from the on-going review into access to new medicines.

“By definition, patients with very rare conditions do not always fit in with normal procedures – and that’s why it’s absolutely right to make arrangements such as this.”

Mr Ingram confirmed the review of current procedure is still underway, and said he was confident that the Scottish Government will continue to listen and act promptly.
