No happy ending for castle mural
Kelburn Castle will fade back to grey as its vivid exterior art is removed.
AN ARTWORK painted on the side of Kelburn Castle in Ayrshire is to come down after causing damage to its 13th century stone walls.
The painting - which was completed only five years ago at a cost of £20,000 - is based upon a coating of cement, and engineers say a build-up of moisture in the render is rotting the ancient stone beneath.
Patrick Boyle, the Earl of Glasgow, was reluctant to see the mural go.
“It has generated global media coverage and visitors from all over the world have come to Kelburn to see for themselves how spectacular it is,” he said.
“Unfortunately this season is likely to be its last so we would encourage anyone who hasn’t seen it already, or who wants to see it one last time, to come along.”
The piece - which took 1500 cans of spray paint to create and was last year voted one of the world’s greatest examples of urban art - is expected to be removed sometime within the next year.
It coincides with a £2.4million investment project that will see a caravan park and indoor pavilion added to the castle’s facilities.
