No takers for Girvan neighbourhood watch? No longer!

GIRVAN could soon be on watch for crime and keeping the community safe after all as interest in neighbourhood watches edges up.

Last week, the Carrick Gazette reported the disappointment of Girvan poice officers at the lack of response to getting schemes started. But proactive residents have since got in touch to tell of their streets’ success.

As of just last week, Miller Avenue has an operating neighbourhood watch scheme – covering its 17 homes and numbers 1-3 Elder Avenue.

The scheme’s coordinator, who did not wish to be named, said she had been inspired at December’s public meeting – held during the spate of housebreakings that saw many residents afraid to leave their homes over Christmas – and would encourage anyone to step up and get a scheme started on their street.

“It gives the residents a little bit of security, makes them aware of what is happening around them and lets them know there is someone they can go to with concerns or information,” she said.

“I thought it was a good idea at the time of the meeting, and I think a lot of people felt the same way. Now ours is up and running and there’s really nothing to it.”
