Painting appeal has paid off

A former Navy engineer with a penchant for painting has achieved his aim of getting back into his hobby – with the Carrick Gazette’s help.

Peter Barber, 74, moved to his home at 3 Burnside Cottages from Leicestershire last summer with his wife Georgina “Jo” and mother-in-law Mary, and has had little time to indulge his artistic streak since then.

But having begun to get the “painting itch”, Peter came to the Carrick Gazette looking for help in tracking down a painting class.

Originally looking for a class within 20 minutes drive of Girvan, or like-minded individuals interested in setting one up under the guidance of a local professional, he last week he told the Gazette his quest has yielded unprecedented results.

Mr Barber’s appeal has seen him not only enroll with a group of oil painting enthusiasts, but set up a watercolour group with himself as teacher.

After our Dalrymple Street office became the contact point for anyone interested in joining Peter in his painting mission, Mr Barber was able to gather enough interest to form a small group – who now plan to meet informally at a member’s South Park Avenue home.

“I have been quite surprised at the response,” Mr Barber said. “It has all happened fairly quickly, but it’s given me the information I needed.

“It’s going really well, and we are very much looking forward to it.”

Mr Barber said his classes were likely to consist of a short demonstration of technique, followed by a periodof practice using that technique on the part of his participants.

Anyone interested in giving watercolour a go should contact Peter Barber on 01465 714975.
