Canon Gibbons at the Altar.

Parishioners of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church in Girvan celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of the ordination of Canon Thomas Gibbons.

The evening began with a Mass followed by a meal in the Church Hall on Monday July 14.

The Canon trained for the priesthood at St Peter’s Seminary in Cardross, entering the Seminary in 1948.

He was ordained at St Andrews Cathedral in Glasgow on the 29th June 1954 by Archbishop Campbell and went to serve in Motherwell Diocese.

This is where he spent most of his priestly life starting in St Brides Cambuslang and finishing in St Columkille Rutherglen in 2010.

The only interruption was when he was appointed to take charge of the Catholic Child Care Offices ( which included the St Margaret Adoption Society ) from 1967 to 1982.

On his retirement in 2010 he came down to join the congregation in Girvan and has become a much loved and respected addition to the Parish Community.
