Rain and winds to batter Carrick

editorial image

CARRICK is once again on the alert for floods as the snow disappears and the rain and winds set in.

A band of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds is expected to cross Scotland this afternoon, bringing with it the risk of localised flooding.

South Ayrshire defied an amber weather warning for snow – its first of the year – on Friday, when for most central and northern areas of Carrick the expected winter weather turned into a washout, with very little snow in sight.

But this morning the Met Office issued a yellow warning for rain over Strathclyde – which joins three other of Scotland’s six Met Office regions under the same alert – as rains and gusts of up to 65mph are predicted in some areas throughout the afternoon.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) have issued an amber flood alert, warning of large waves upon western coastlines with the potential for spray and wave overtopping. Ayrshire and Arran joins 12 other Scottish regions under the same alert.

And the severe weather is expected to continue into the middle of the week, with early Met Office gale warnings already in place for Tuesday and Wednesday.

A spell of very windy weather is predicted to spread across Scotland during Tuesday night and early Wednesday, with gusts of up to 70mph expected well inland.

The public are being advised of the likelihood of restrictions on exposed bridges and disruption to travel.

To stay up to date with expected weather conditions visit the Met Office website. Advice and information on flooding is also available through Floodline on 0845 9881188, or by visiting the Floodline website.
