Rough justice for Stranraer in guidebook

The Rough Guide travel publishing firm has been slammed for disparaging Stranraer.

The firm’s latest guidebook says “there is really no reason to go” to Stranraer. The comments appear in the Rough Guide to Britain.

Now the area’s local MP has written to the publisher calling for it to change this in future editions of the guidebook and has provided some suggestions for inclusion.

Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown said: “I was shocked when I read this.

“They have written the whole town off in just once sentence. Tourism is so important to our area that it is really unhelpful, and frankly offensive, for a guidebook to tell people not to visit Stranraer.

“As the local MP, and someone who has lived in this region my whole life, I know that they couldn’t be more wrong. I have written to Rough Guides to ask them to revise their comments for future editions and have included some suggestions for their book.

“There are countless reasons for tourists to visit Stranraer, and the whole area, and I will never stop banging the drum for our region.”
