Serious road collision near Ballantrae

A ROAD traffic accident near Ballantrae has left a woman seriously injured.

Emergency services attended the site of a crash on the A77 near Ballantrae at around 6.15pm on Wednesday September 5 after a car collided with a bus.

A total of 13 officers from Girvan and Colmonell Community Fire Stations were called to the scene, and had to use hydraulic cutting equipment to free a 55-year-old female driver from her car, in which she had become trapped.

A police spokeswoman confirmed the woman was air-lifted to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock by Sea King helicopter. She was in a serious condition. The driver of the bus, a 50-year-old male, was uninjured.

The A77 remained closed in both directions for around eight hours after the crash.

A Ballantrae resident, who did not wish to be named, saw the helicopter take off. He said he had been unaware of the collision at the time, but that accidents are a frequent occurance on that stretch of road.

“There are concerns locally about the number of accidents on the road and there have been for many years. They are fairly common,” he said.
