South Ayrshire Council gets social media savvy

CARRICK residents will get an insight into the work of their council next week when Twitter takes over.

South Ayrshire Council is to join 30 of Scotland’s 32 councils in using the social media platform for a 24-hour period to reach local residents as part of annual event, Twitter 24.

The day aims to raise awareness of the breadth and complexity of services offered by councils by having staff use real-time micro-blogging to illustrate what they do.

Last year’s inaugural event is being developed in 2012 by the addition of interactive engagement. Residents will be encouraged to communicate with South Ayrshire Council directly using the Twitter 24 hashtags #mycouncil #sac.

South Ayrshire Council’s Twitter handle - @southayrshire - already has around 3400 followers; more than double the amount of followers it had before the first Twitter 24 event in 2011. It uses Twitter on a daily basis to put information out and answer queries about the council.

Claire Monaghan, South Ayrshire Council’s Head of Policy, Performance & Communication, said: “‘We are always looking for ways to engage with our residents, to let them know about our services and also find out what they think about local issues.

“I hope lots of customers, residents and visitors will join in Twitter 24 by following us on Twitter, tweeting with the #mycouncil #sac hashtags when they speak to our staff or use one of our services during the 24 hour period, retweet us or ask questions on Twitter.”

The 2012 event will take place from noon on Tuesday September 18 to noon on September 19. Anyone who does not already have a Twitter account can find out more about Twitter and sign up at www.twitter.com/about.
