Talks try to halt action in pay row

FMC Biopolymer says it is open and committed to ongoing constructive dialogue with union representatives to resolve a pay dispute which saw workers at the site take industrial action last week.

A statement from the company, which manufactures from nine locations worldwide including the USA, Chile and Sicily, said that it was disappointed that employees took further industrial action last week after an initial strike on September 12.

FMC Biopolymer Girvan site manager Matt Miller said: “Senior site management have been engaged in continuing contructive communication and dialogue with regional and local Unite union representatives.

“As a result of this, an improved pay offer was tabled to union members on September 19, along with an offer of the use of ACAS.

“Unfortunately, the pay offer was rejected.

“The company’s improved pay offer to the membership is a fair and equitable offer in the current UK economic climate.

“The offer also helps keep costs competitive and supports long-term viability for the site.

“The company recognises the right of our union members to undertake the repeat industrial action and are open and committed to ongoing constructive dialogue with ACAS and union representatives to resolve the current dispute.”

However, Unite says the less than three per cent final offer is “unsatisfactory” and comes on the back of previous below-inflation increases.
