Some of the top artists playing this year’s 40th anniversary Girvan traditional Folk Festival include Altan and the Robyn Stapleton Trio with Claire Hastings.
Also on the bill for the festival running from Friday, May 2 to Sunday, May 4 are the Fiona Hunter Band, Ellen and Kevin Mitchell, Chris Miles, Billy Henderson, May Mayberry, Mike Hancock and Colin McAllister.
Timetable of events;
On Saturday 3rd May at 11am there’s competitions in Songwriting and Traditional Singing at the Westcliffe Hotel, at 11am a Storytelling Workshop in French and English with our friends from Torcy at the Hamilton Arms.
Between 11:30 am - 12:30 pm there’s the Childrens singing workshop with Billy Henderson and Susie Kelly at the Catholic Hall.
From 1-4 pm there’s a Circus Skills Workshop with Mike Hancock at the Catholic Hall.
From 1-2:30pm there’s a Whistle workshop with Stephen Heffernan.Stephen will start with the basics and find time to talk about different styles of playing.
At the Carrick Buildings from 1:30 - 2:30pm there’s aGuitar Workshop with Hajimi Takahashi. Haji will start with simple accompaniment and progress to more advanced styles if desired. That takes place at the Carrick Buildings.
At 2pm there’s a Session with Failte at The Vaults, a session with The Scotia Band at The Anchor Bar and a Session with Home Made Jam at The Roxy.
From 2:30 -4pm there’s a Traditional Singing workshop with Chris Miles and Ewan McLennan and a Bodhran workshop with Ewan Baird at the Carrick Buildings.
At 2pm there’s the Bobby Robb Tribute Concert with Robyn Stapleton and Claire Hastings, Chris Miles, May Mayberry, Heather Heywood and Billy Henderson at the Hamilton Arms.
From 2:30 - 4pm there is a Button Box( Melodeon) workshop with Stephen Heffernan. Stephen will get any beginners started or give advice about improving technique. That takes place at the Carrick Buildings.
From 2:30 - 4:00pm there’s a playing in a Folk Group workshop: Members of the Stars band will give the benefit of their experience of accompanying singers and playing with other musicians. Again that takes place at the Carrick Buildings.
At 7:30pm there’s the Evening Celebrity Concert with Altan, Arthur Johnstone and the Stars Band, Ellen and Kevin Mitchell at Girvan Academy.
From 8:00 pm there’s a Session with Robyn Stapleton Trio and Clairee Hastings at The Vaults, a Session with Home Made Jam at the Hamilton Arms and at 11pm a Late Ceilidh Dance/ Concert with Tattiehowkers Band and a look back to earlier years with previous guests at the Catholic Hall.
On Sunday frpm 1-2.30pm there’s a traditional Singing workshop. There will be opportunities to discuss what is going on for us as singers when we choose a song, learn it and sing it.
There will be room for questions , comment and discussion on any issues around singing and songs and with a bit of luck something approaching answers.
Sunday also sees a fiddle workshop with Carol Anderson, a family Ceilidh at the Catholic Hall, sessions, workshops and a folk Group Competition/Open Stage at the Westcliffe Hotel with the Farewell Concert at 7.30pm in the Catholic Hall and at 10pmthe 40th Birthday Bash again at the Catholic Hall.
