Tweeting soldier on probation

THE Stranraer soldier who made national headlines last week after a Twitter comment to pop singer Lily Allen backfired on him has been put on probation by the Army.

Twenty-one-year old Harry Wilson, a sniper serving with the Royal Scots Borderers, sent the tweet from his girlfriend’s home in Newton Stewart. It read: “All the best with your new family just seen you bought s*** I meant adopted a child from Africa #Hero.” But the omission of a comma after the word bought resulted in Wilson being labelled a “racist” and Ms Allen complaining about him to the MoD.

The lance corporal was then hauled over the coals by Army top brass at the regimental headquarters in Edinburgh.

To make amends, Wilson send Lily Allen a bouquet of flowers and a letter of apology. She then tweeted: “I have just received some flowers and a hand-written apology from Harry Wilson, which I accept. I hope we can all now move on. Thank you.”

The soldier was allegedly taking part in a popular Twitter wind up called “BroxiWindUp” where users of the social networking facilty poke fun at celebrities.

The family of Wilson’s girlfriend, Jodie Milroy from Newton Stewart, were annoyed that an alleged comment she had posted on her Facebook page saying “He’s staying in the Army” was quoted in a national tabloid when she had not been on Facebook.
