CREATIVE types in Ayrshire now have award-winning performance courses on their doorstep as three programmes at UWS’s Ayr campus are industry-recognised for their quality.
The University of the West of Scotland campus on Ayr’s University Avenue this month had a trio of its drama courses named among the first to achieve new ‘Recognition’ status from accreditation provider Drama UK.
Historically, industry accredited quality assurance has only been available to vocational courses at conservatoire drama schools, and UWS’ BA (Hons) Contemporary Screen Acting, BA (Hons) Musical Theatre, and BA (Hons) Performance are three of only four degree programmes yet awarded the prestigious new title.
Ian Kellgren, Chief Executive of Drama UK, said: “We have acknowledged that there are now many more providers in this sector and there is a need to provide quality assurance for courses that are less vocational than conservatoire training but offer a very real benefit to the industry.”
Subject leader at UWS, Jane Robertson, said the department was delighted to be among the first in the UK to be granted Drama UK Recognition, and the quality assurance mark is one that UWS staff and students are very proud of.
