Winter weather is a washout
CARRICK got off lightly last week as most of South Ayrshire defied the weather warnings and instead got drenched.
After a short-lived bout of snow, for most of Carrick the expected winter weather turned into a washout – despite conditions in neighbouring local authority areas becoming so bad schools had to close last week, including five in East Ayrshire and 11 in Dumfries and Galloway.
But there is hope for a flurry of white-out weather yet as the Met Office forecast up to 10cm of snow in some areas.
The latest indication of extreme weather comes with a yellow warning for rain and wind, which was issued for Strathclyde this morning in the wake of a slow-moving front heading across Scotland.
Forecasters warn of persistent and heavy precipitation falling on already saturated ground today and into tomorrow (Friday) morning, with a risk of localised flooding.
Rain is expected to turn to snow at times, mainly over ground of more than 200 metres in height, but with a risk too at low levels.
Westerly winds with gusts of 50-60mph – even as high as 70mph on exposed coasts and hills – are expected to continue, and the Met Office’s yellow warning for wind will remain in place until 9pm tonight.
The warning has however been downgraded since Monday when an amber alert for wind and floods was in place in Ayrshire and Arran, with the potential for spray and wave overtopping in coastal communities.
