Young Scot goes from strength to strength
THE NUMBER of card-carrying youngsters in South Ayrshire has increased by nearly 11,000 in only the past five years as more than ever sign up for Young Scot.
Figures show the number of young people in the county who have the card rocketed to 10,740 this year from only 52 in 2007, while Scotland as a whole has seen a 787 per cent increase.
There were just over 52,000 individuals carrying the card five years ago compared to 461,505 in 2012.
The Young Scot National Entitlement Card – available for Scots aged 11 to 26 – is an electronic smartcard which enables young people to access local authority services and receive discounts from a range of businesses and organisations. It can also act as proof of age.
Discounts include 10 per cent off at Topshop, Topman, Dorothy Perkins and Internacionale. Young Scot members can also receive discounts on sports and outdoor activities, such as 20 per cent off at Go Ape and reduced prices at selected swimming pool and fitness facilities.
Carrick MSP Adam Ingram said the cards are a great way to save money and especially useful in the current tough financial times.
“With more and more local services being accessed by cards like this, it is extremely gratifying to see the speed with which these innovations are spreading,” he said.
“I hope that we will see even more young people take up their cards in coming years and have no doubt that the scheme will go from strength to strength.”
