A MAIDENS man renowned for his selfless acts of service to the village’s harbour folk has been celebrated with a surprise birthday party.

Gordon Munro, 70, had been led to believe his was going for a birthday meal at Wildings with friend Sandra Thomson on Friday February 15, and was bewildered when he was instead handed the keys to the village’s bowling club house.

“Gordon was flabbergasted on arrival to find so many of his friends and full family awaiting there,” said Sandra. “He said he couldn’t believe all those people had turned up for him.”

Gordon is always willing to lend a hand to anyone, and has notched up many voluntary hours working at Maidens Harbour – from driving trucks, to carrying out repairs, to helping out local boat-owners – and his nearest and dearest decided to honour his work with a buffet and party on his special occasion.

Live music was provided by Michael Andrews, food by Dale Russel, and bar service by Peter and Rosemary.

“A great night was had by all who came to join in the celebrations,” said Sandra.

The organisers would like to thank Astrid Rae for all her help on the night and David McGettigan for taking the photographs.
