A 42 year-old man is in hospital with serious injuries after a firearms incident at a farm near Ballantrae.
Armed police response units and air ambulance crews attended the incident at around 12.45pm on Sunday.
Large parts of the area next to the farm were cordoned off by officers.
It is understood that the man sustained injuries to his face and neck and was airlifted to hospital where he was said to be in a serious but stable condition as the Carrick Gazette went to press.
Police confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and that there was no threat to the public at any time.
A spokesperson said: “We were contacted by Glasgow Ambulance Control who reported a male had shot himself in the face. Officers attended in full firearms regalia due to the nature of the incident but there were no suspicious circumstances.”
