Stranraer garage wins top award

Downie’s Garage in Stranraer has been named Micro Automotive Business of the Year 2012 in the Institute of the Motor Industry’s (IMI) annual Skillmiles Awards.

The award was presented to Downie’s Garage by IMI patron HRH Prince Michael of Kent at the IMI’s annual dinner at the Savoy in London.

Now in its fifth year, the IMI’s Skillmiles Awards aim to promote the valuable contribution many companies and individuals in the automotive sector are making to support skills development.

Steve Nash, IMI chief executive, said: “Downie’s Garage boasts over half a century of experience between the father and son team. This business has set out to support the IMI by attending employer and HR forum events in Scotland and by doing so has enabled us to demonstrate the breadth of involvement across all sizes of automotive businesses in Scotland.

“Downie’s Garage provides support for the development of our apprenticeship frameworks and provides valuable work experience opportunities for several young people within the community.”
