Two killed in tragic accident

POLICE have appealed for witnesses after two men were killed in a tragic road accident near Maybole.

Two men died and a teenage boy was injured following a crash between a van and a lorry.

A Ford Transit van collided with a Mercedes HGV on the A77 Kirkoswald Road at Maybole, Ayshire at around 11.30am on Thursday.

The 35-year-old van driver and a 21-year-old passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

Another passenger in the van, a 15-year-old boy, was taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock where he is currently being treated. Hospital staff described his condition as stable.

The 55-year-old HGV driver was taken to Ayr Hospital and released after treatment.

The van had been travelling south on the road, while the HGV was going in the opposite direction.

Strathclyde Police have appealed for information about the crash.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said: “Firefighters were called to a fatal road traffic collision in Maybole.

“At around 11.30am, crews from Kilmarnock, Ayr and Maybole were called to the accident on the A77 near Maybole following reports of a collision between a lorry and a van.

“Crews arrived on scene to find that two people had managed to escape their vehicles but had suffered multiple injuries, they were initially treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken by ambulance to Crosshouse Hospital.

“Firefighters quickly set to work in order to identify the condition of the two people who remained trapped in the vehicles, but sadly it was confirmed that one of those trapped had died. Firefighters worked quickly to remove the other casualty using hydraulic cutting equipment, but despite the best efforts of paramedics, he sadly died from his injuries.

“Crews then remained on scene for several hours as they stabilised the vehicles involved in the accident.”
