Youth saves the day

Girvan’s Boating Pond will reopen on Saturday … under new management.

After unforseen delays which prevented the pond from opening during the recent spell of hot weather, the popular amenity at the harbour will be run for the summer by members of the Girvan Youth Trust.

They have agreed to work in partnership with South Ayrshire Council to maintain and operate the facility as well as the adjoining putting green and they are introducing a host of new events to get the public rolling up.

So from Saturday, the pond and putting green will be open from 1pm until 7pm every Saturday and Sunday until the beginning of September. It will also open on Fridays and Mondays during holiday weekends.

In addition, there will be special Wednesday “Fun Days” including Pirate Days, Treasure Hunts, Face Painting and competitions.

These will take place from the end of June until the end of August.

And, weather permitting, these Wednesdays will also see a programme of free puppet and magic shows with story telling for younger children and families. The idea is also to keep the cost to families as low as possible and family tickets will be available.

The Boating Pond is also one area which has been identified for considered future improvements by the separate ‘youth bank’ of 12 young people who the Girvan Youth Trust has recently recruited under the new ‘AND BEYOND’ project.

David McCue, GYT Youth Worker in charge of the Boating Pond project said “Our the team of young people who will be operating the facilities are looking to provide something special and affordable for the local community and visiting families. The success of this new venture will however be very much dependent on the support of the whole community”
