CARRICK made the short trip south to Ayr on Saturday to face fellow promotees Millbrae.
In what is always a tough fixture Carrick made the task that little bit harder by going behind in the opening minutes to a converted try by the Millbrae No 9 from a well rehearsed set move.
Euan McGregor struck a penalty from in front of
the post
s minutes later to bring the score to 7-3 but despite playing most of the rugby of the half Carrick ended up on the wrong side of a 23-3 scoreline as the half-time whistle blew thanks to a converted intercept try and a further three penalties.
Carrick started the second half with a little more purpose and continued to play some good rugby with the ball in hand but it was not until the 65th minute that centre Nick Rossi crossed the line with Euan McGregor converting, taking the score to 23-10.
Carrick pushed for the all important losing bonus point but were denied by stout Millbrae defense and some basic handling errors at crucial moments.
The defeat leaves Carrick fourth from bottom and a big improvement is needed for this week's visit of Strathclyde Police to the School Field The kick-off is at 3pm.
