FRIDAY night saw Ayr racecourse host the Saints and Sinners Charity Race Night for the second year running and despite the mixed weather, Ayrshire's finest turned out in their thousands to support the worthy cause.
The evening – which was sponsored by local drinks supply company Wallace's Express – kicked off with the first race at 6.20pm, and ended with an outstanding performance by Scissor Sisters tribute band, The Scizzor Sisterz.
The main event on the even
ing's seven race card was the Saints and Sinners Handicap, and victory went to Grissom, who was given a superb ride by Slade O'Hara. Grissom managed to hold off Danetime to take the contest after a hard fought finish by a short head.
Next came Where's Reiley, who sat handy enough waiting for a gap to appear in the closing stages, but lacked in pace when it did and had to make do with third.
In the other big handicap of the evening, The La Barrique Fine Wines Handicap, Jim Goldie's Stellite lapped up the strong pace provided by Kevin Ryan's Errigal Lad, taking the contest with a strong staying finish by half a length from Kiwi Bay.
The winner seems to have improved since his last run where he disappointed at Musselburgh.
Kiwi Bay stayed on well to finish second and should be back to winning form soon after this big effort.
The action continued on Saturday, when the Craigie track hosted a top quality card and it was encouraging to see some of the UK's top handlers having entries at the meeting.
There were also some Irish raiders present for the challenge, including the classy Sugar Free, who was sent across the water by leading trainer Tommy Stack.
Another bumper crowd attended the second day of the two-day meeting, and the Listed Scottish News of the World EBF Land 'O' Burns Fillies Stakes was the highlight of the seven-race card.
A good quality field lined up for the feature and they went off at a blistering pace with Jargelle making the running.
This suited Sugar Free, the Irish Raider, who was sitting handy before making her move with a furlong left to run.
She was joined at the front by City Dancer, who tried to come at her with a late run, but the post came in time for Tommy Stack's charge to win by three-quarters of a length. Sugar Free will now head for a 6f Gp3 race at York.
Elsewhere on the card The Scottish Sun Miss Scotland Handicap provided Ayr with a home-owned winner in the shape of Gordonsville – pictured – who is owned by local businesswoman Janice McPherson.
Trained by Jim Goldie and ridden by local jockey Danny Tudhope, the winner was pushed to the front early on and this tactic seemed to suit him.
He stuck to the task in hand and held on strongly to see off the runner-up Dolly Penrose who was closing in.
The winner – who has already won the Musselburgh Gold Cup this season – will be aimed at the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle this weekend.

Yeats makes history
at Royal Ascot
THE remarkable Yeats deservedly secured his place in the history books by winning his fourth consecutive Ascot Gold Cup at Royal Ascot on Thursday.
Aidan O'Brien produced the eight-year-old in tremendous form on the day and Johnny Murtagh gave the son of Sadler's Wells a no-nonsense ride, taking up the running a long way from home and never really looking in danger of being caught by the pursuing Patkai.
The winner was unsurprisingly greeted by rapturous scenes of celebration in the winner's enclosure and he will now be remembered as one of the best stayers ever.
Murtagh was also crowned leading jockey at the meeting despite missing the last two days as a result of a ban.
Yeats now has a few options before him with the Goodwood Cup, the King George at Ascot or the Irish St Leger. There is even a mention of an entry for the Arc in October
Yeats's stablemate, Mastercraftsman, also triumphed, adding a St James's Palace Stakes to the Irish 2000 Guineas he won earlier this year.
Len Lungo cutting back
ONE of Scotland's most successful trainers, Len Lungo, is giving up his professional trainer's licence, citing the difficult economic times as one of the reasons.
Lungo, who saddled two Cheltenham Festival winners during a successful training career, commented: "Ashleybank Investments have reduced their numbers from 40 down to three, and we had a total of about 60 at one stage."
He added: "I have no regrets and it's been great. I just didn't want to spend anymore winters travelling round to all the tracks.
Lungo hopes to continue as a permit holder, training his own horses, as well as spending more time at his holiday home in the Algarve.
Irish Derby
THE Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby will take place at the Curragh on Sunday, and the excitement and expectation is building for what is perhaps the most anticipated rematch of the season between the first two home in the Epsom Derby– Sea The Stars and Fame And Glory.
John Oxx has stated that Sea The Stars will only run if the ground stays firmer than good, so the whole racing world is sure to be willing the rain clouds away.
Many feel that the Aidan O'Brien-trained Fame And Glory could well reverse the Epsom form with Sea The Stars granted a stronger test of stamina, whilst just as many are of the opinion that Sea The Stars was well on top at the finish and will uphold the form at the Curragh.
It is a truly mouth-watering contest in prospect and it looks sure to live up to its billing as the centerpiece of the Irish racing calendar.
This year, the stars of racing will be joined by the stars of the culinary world when 15 of Ireland's top restaurants and chefs bring a Taste of Ireland to the The Curragh. Taste of Ireland will be this summer's most exciting food festival, combining the thrills of Ireland's premier flat race meeting with the delights of the country's top restaurants serving a range of their signature dishes.
Taste of Ireland is located in a specially-designed tented enclosure beside the main parade ring, and will offer food from celebrated restaurants leading chefs Nevin Maguire and Kevin Dundon, the Michelin-starred Oliver Dunne, Derry Clarke, Ross Lewis and Richard Corrigan.
