Seasiders climb into promotion place after win

GIRVAN took the three points on Monday night at a ground they've had a terrible record at in recent years.
Craigmark Burntonians 1 Girvan FC 3

Michael Moffat and Scott Clelland had put the Seasiders on easy street before Graham Neil's spectacular effort ten minutes from time set up a tense finish.
But an own goal from Steph Holland at full time restored Girvans two-goal advantage.
Under glorious sunshine Girvan started the game as bright as the overhead conditions and were busy moving the ball across the park.
After only two minutes they should have been in front but were denied by some fine goalkeeping and wasteful finishing.
Clelland smacked a terrific half volley from the corner of the penalty box which was pushed away by Steven Douglas.
Moffat, though, collected the loose ball and floated a cross to the back post to the unmarked Darren Mitchell just yards out.
Normally you would bet your mortgage on Mitchell puting chances like this away but he somehow managed to screw his header wide.
Billy Thomson's men were playing some nice flowing stuff and a good move involving Mitchell and David McVittie created an opening for Kevin Biggart but he fired his effort over the bar from 18 yards.
Stuart Robertson was brought back into the Girvan side and was called into action to divert David Claperton's long range drive onto the bar.
The Seasiders were creating chances and Mitchell again should have hit the target from close range.
Biggart's free kick was headed back across goal by Moffat to the unmarked Mitchell but he headed wide.
The opening goal came nine minutes before the interval and was the complete opposite of what Girvan had been playing.
Throughout the game so far everything was going through their midfield pairing of Biggart and Kriss Mitchell.
This time it was a long punt up the park from Robertson that was not cleared properly by Holland and Moffat raced in behind and rounded Douglas and fired home.
It was no more than Girvan deserved for their play in the first half, which was at times a joy to watch.
They almost went in at half time two goals up but Moffat was denied by a good stop from Douglas after Mitchell's flick on.
Craigmark looked to get back into the game after the break and almost did so after 50 minutes with a thundering Steven Shankland effort that smacked the cross bar from 18 yards.
On 58 minutes Girvan really should have scored to cap off a fine run from McVittie.
He collected the ball on the edge of his own penalty box and skipped past three challenges on his way towards the Craigmark box.
Then, rather unselfishly, he squared the ball to Kriss Mitchell whose shot was blocked by Douglas.
The second goal finally came with 20 minutes remaining.
Again Girvan were quick on the counter attack with Moffat bursting down the left hand side.
He crossed over for Mitchell who cleverly laid the ball into the run of Clelland who fired home high into the roof of the net.
But the game still wasn't finished at this stage and the home side quickly reminded Thomson's men that they weren't out of it just yet.
Scott Caldwell rattled Girvan's cross bar for a third time in the match from 30 yards.
Neil then burst free into the box and clipped the ball past Robertson but it was cleared off the line by Stevie O'Donnell.
He did find the back of the net with four minutes to go and it was a fantastic strike.
A sweetly hit half volley left Robertson with no chance as it flew into the top corner.
The goal set up a nervy finish for Girvan but they coped well and made the game safe when Darren Mitchell collected a loose ball and his direct run into the box saw him look to cut the ball back across goal and was met by former Maybole man Holland who could only stroke the ball past his own keeper and into the goal.
The victory moves Girvan back into the promotion spot and sets it up nicely for Monday night's clash with Hurlford at Hamilton Park.
Committee members are urging locals to get out in their numbers to back the team during their run-in to the end of the season and their push for the championship.
