The Alpine Bikes Muddy Tyres Mountain Bike race took place on Sunday with Ayr Burners fielding a team in the mens pairs event. Damp conditions overnight resulted in the already technical course around the Crawfurdland estate in East Ayrshire becoming even more arduous around the boggy route with slick tree roots, steep descents, and fast single track sections through the woods adding to the action for both riders and spectators. A packed field of almost 60 competitors started the gruelling 5 hour contest, with lap times varying from 40 minutes to over an hour as the course became ever more quaggy for the riders. ‘Burners’ duo of Lindsay McGarvie and Paul Chappells used their well honed off-road technique to good effect as they managed to squeeze in a 6th lap of the estate which handed them the well deserved win on the day.

Week 6 of the Ayr Burners Summer Series takes place on Thursday night with the ‘Skills Olympics’ event. This round of the series will test the riders skill, strength, strategy and speed with various disciplines including track stands, obstacle relays, and navigation games. The action kicks off at 7pm in Rozelle Park, with both members and prospective members more than welcome.

Saturday 25th July sees ‘The Burners’ head into the high moors of the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park with a mix of cycle paths, farm roads and 4x4 tracks, with stunning views and fantastic trails on the menu. This ride is best suited to cross bikes, mountain bikes or Hybrid bikes with stout tyres. Lochwinnoch railway station is the designated meeting point at 0945, where we will take NCR 7 and 75 to Kilmacolm before taking quiet backroads onto the Duchal Moor along the disused grouse railway.
