Both Girvan FC and Maybole Juniors suffered heavy defeats in the Ardagh League Cup on Saturday.
Girvan’s struggles continued as they crashed 6-1 away at Craigmark Burntonians.
And Maybole were also on the receiving end of a thrashing from fellow Ayrshire side Whitletts Victoria as they lost 4-0.
However, there was some consolation for Maybole as they still secured qualification to a quarter final tie against Auchinleck Talbot on Wednesday night at Auchinleck.
Girvan’s threadbare squad were once again heavily beaten meaning that they finished bottom of section three having lost all five games, scoring only three goals and conceding 28.
They start their league campaign with a home match at Hamilton Park on Saturday (30th August) against Kello Rovers with kick off at 2pm.
There is hope for Girvan though as Kello also struggled in their league cup section finishing bottom of the group losing all five games.
Meanwhile, Maybole were blown away by a superb first half performance by Whitletts as they ran in four goals.
A minutes silence was held before the game in memory of Maybole fan Rab Ferrolls who passed away last week.
However, it was Whitletts who came out the blocks firing and scored in five minutes through Michael O’Connor.
Further first half goals were added through Jim Wilson and a double from Tony Balfour.
Maybole boss Peter Leonard used all three subs at half time and in improved second half performance they created a lot more chances but were unable to find a way back into the game.
The league season for Maybole also begins on Saturday with a trip to Cumbernauld in the Super League first division where Leonard’s side will be hoping to ensure they get off to a good start as they hope to emulate or better last season’s fourth placed finish.
