Girvan are Ayrshire District League champions after a 3-0 win at Kello Rovers on Monday night.

The team also secured the incredible achievement of remaining unbeaten in the league this season with only one game left.

Girvan will play in the West of Scotland Super League Dirst Division next season and are in the first round proper of the Scottish Cup.

It’s a fantastic turnaround for the club who were sitting bottom of the Ayrshire District League when coach Peter Leonard took over in January 2015.

Girvan knew they had to beat Kello on Monday night to secure the title and got off to a great start with a goal from David Cunningham. David Jardine and Craig Reid added another two in the second half as The Seasiders then secured the win.

On Saturday Girvan had won 3-2 away to Muirkirk while Irvine lost to Craigmark at home, their first defeat in seven games, to set up the drama on Monday night.

Coach Peter Leonard was delighted with the club’s efforts this season.

He said: “Considering where we were it is a fantastic effort. If you look at the likes of the number of goals conceded and with one game left being unbeaten in the league it’s a fantastic effort.

“The team have been very consistent, in the last 13 games we have won 11 and drawn two, and we have only lost seven goals as well.

“People forget we signed 14 or 15 players in the close season as well, so it is no mean feat.

“It’s not just one or two people the whole club is involved. The committee have been fantastic, they have put a lot of work in, the park is in great shape and the facilities are excellent.

“It’s a season we will well remember I’m sure.”

In their third game of the week Girvan are away to Kilwinning in the Ayrshire Weekly Press Cup - Round 2 tonight (Wednesday) with a 7.15pm kick off while the league match on Saturday against Saltcoats has been cancelled, with no date yet set for the re-arranged fixture.

The club’s player of the year awards at Tarbolton on May 28 is shaping up to be a great night.

Girvan will also be involved in the Evening Times Cup. This is a knockout tournament played at the end of the season between the winners of the five West Region league competitions during the preceding season.
