Girvan collect comfortable win ahead of cup tie

Girvan FC continued their fine recent form with a comfortable 4-0 win over Muirkirk at Hamilton Park on Saturday.

They started the game in the best possible fashion with a goal inside the first two minutes when a corner kick from Chris Allan found the head of Steven Cargill who made it 1-0.

A superb second goal by Scott Dinwoodie midway through the first half from 30 yards had Girvan in total control of the game and they killed the game off two minutes after the break.

Allan’s shot was blocked but Paul Cameron was on hand to head into the net.

Girvan had several other chances to add to their lead but the fourth goal didn’t arrive until ten minutes from the end when Allan’s free kick curled in.

The win means Girvan remain unbeaten in their four league games so far and they have moved up to third in the table, three points behind leaders Irvine Victoria.

Delighted manager Peter Leonard said: “We got off to a perfect start and once Dinwoodie had scored the second goal we were in complete control of the game.

“Credit to Muirkirk as they are a very young team and they kept coming at us but it was good for me to get the opportunity to keep some legs fresh for the cup tie against Cambuslang.”

Girvan are set to face Cambuslang at Hamilton Park on Saturday in the second round of the Scottish Junior Cup and Leonard is expecting a tough tie.

“It will definitely be a tough test, they are a Glasgow team and they will fight for each other.

“I imagine it’s going to be like the Thorniewood game a couple of weeks ago and they’ll be in our faces and make it a physical game but we are prepared for that with the team we have now.

“We’re going to be missing Michael Mossie and Greg Gallagher but Jo Maxwell and Tony Murphy will be back.”

The club are currently looking for people to help them out in the running of the club whether on matchdays, fundraising, being part of the committee or helping in anyway.
