Girvan FC round off league campaign with win

Girvan FC rounded off their league campaign for 2013/14 with a narrow 3-2 victory at Muirkirk on Saturday.

The Seasiders had enjoyed a comfortable 5-0 win over their opponents earlier this month but this match proved to be a lot closer despite Girvan leading 3-0 at half-time.

The win means that Girvan end the season in seventh place in the Ayrshire District League, with ten wins from their 24 league games coupled with six draws and eight defeats in an up and down season to give them a total of 36 points.

Muirkirk managed by Scottish football cult hero Jose Quitongo made a bright start and forced Girvan keeper David Markey into a smart save in the opening minute.

However, in the 12th minute Girvan grabbed the lead when Andrew Hislop’s ball was slotted home by Alan Orr from 12 yards.

Four minutes later, two Girvan trialists combined as the right back number two thread a ball through to the trialist up front who fired home.

And four minutes before half time Girvan looked to have sealed the points when a Hislop free kick was slotted home by another trialist, this time number eight.

However, on 63 minutes Muirkirk pulled one back when Kris Stewart scored.

The hosts then lost the plot in the last fifteen minutes as their number four was sent off for a second booking on 77 minutes before on 84 minutes they were reduced to nine men for an alleged attempted headbutt.

That didn’t stop Kris Stewart making it 3-2 from the penalty spot in 88 minutes after a foul by Orr but Girvan held on for the win.

Girvan are hoping to appoint a new manager in the next couple of weeks with co-caretaker Danny Cunningham keen to land the post on a permanent basis after leading the team with Darren Mitchell.

The latest winner of the clubs 50/50 draw was Allan Rowan who won £58.
