Girvan store is dancing on ice

Ice skater Heather Mitchell has been twinned with the Asda Girvan store as part of the company’s Sports Aid programme which aims to support promising young athletes.

Heather and her 16 year old ice dance partner Lewis Gibson who is from Prestwick, are already British Novice Pairs Figure Skating Champions after they won the title in Sheffield last year. They now aim to move up a grade and are attempting to qualify for the finals at Junior level this year.

They are currently devoting many hours of practice to the two new programmes they have developed.

They won the British Championships for Novice Pairs at the national competition in Sheffield last year and are current Scottish Champions at that level.

This year they hope to move up a grade and qualify for the national finals at Junior level. They have developed two new programmes to which they are devoting many hours of practice.

Next month they are off to the world-famous Mariposa School of Skating in Ontario in Canada where they will undergo an intensive ten days of summer school training by top Canadian pairs coach Lee Barkell.

Their ultimate goal is to make it to the Winter Olympics and the ASDA support will be a big boost to their efforts to reach the top.

As an added bonus, Heather was named as ASDA’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ for the whole of the UK and was presented by Michelle with a shopping voucher worth £100 to mark the achievement.
