Disappointing defeat for Girvan
GIRVAN slumped to a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Darvel on Saturday, despite taking the lead in the early part of this Stagecoach west of Scotland Ayrshire District League game.
Club chairman Tam McCreadie said this week it was a very poor performance by the team who had ‘just one of those days’.
The first real chance for any side did not arrive until the 14th minute of this game and it fell to Darvel.
A ball over the top of the Girvan back four allowed one of the Darvel strikers to get a shot on goal but thankfully for Girvan it was wide of the target. Girvan took the lead in the 19th minute when Darren Mitchell got past the centre half and squared the ball across the face of goal for David McVittie to turn and score from about eight yards out.
In the 22nd minute McVittie had a good chance with a shot just inside the box but the Darvel keeper made a good save.
Darvel had a chance with a well worked free kick in the 39th minute with a low cross into the box but the ball went wide.
Girvan had another chance in 50 minutes through Darren Mitchell but in the 60th minute Craig Harvey was sent off for a second bookable offence and Girvan struggled after that.
In the 70th minute Jarred Nisbet made an excellent double save before Girvan broke up the park and defender Scott McGilp found himself in the centre forward position but the defence managed to block his shot.
Minutes later Darvel scored from a corner when a headed attempt was cleared and Darvel scored from the rebound to make it 1-1 with about 20 minutes to go.
But in the 75th minute Darvel were awarded a penalty when Danny Cunningham was judged to have brought down a player inside the box. Girvan had a good chance to draw level in the 83rd minute when the Darvel keeper had to make a double save, saving first with his legs and then turning another attempt round the post.
Darvel, who had parted company with their manager last week, had their new boss watching so perhaps stepped up their game for this match to impress.Girvan play Irvine Victoria on Saturday at Hamilton Park at 2pm and now have six games left.
