GIRVAN began 2013 with a winning attitude when they faced Muirkirk away on Saturday.

Although not a score to equal the last time they faced the home side – when the Seasiders reached full time with an 8-0 lead – the Girvan boys went away with a worthy 4-0 victory against their Ayrshire District League rivals.

Girvan started well, with a chance for the side to score in only the fourth minute, but Craig Harvey’s shot was saved by Muirkirk’s keeper.

A second early opportunity for Girvan came along shortly afterwards, but a David McVittie shot hit the post and was cleared by the defence.

In the 12th minute, Girvan’s efforts finally paid off when a kick from debutant Steven Brown failed to secure a lead, only to be headed into the net by Scott Cunningham.

Girvan then scored a second as Jo Maxwell picked up the ball in the Muirkirk half and fired a shot past the keeper. And, by half time, Girvan had added another goal after Darren Mitchell, returning to the pitch after a three-match absence due to a knee injury, fired home - set up nicely by Scott McGilp’s determined pelt to the penalty box.

Mitchell got his second share of glory in the 34th minute, when another charge for the penalty box set up a successful John McMillan shot from ten yards out.

Girvan got a chance for a fifth in the 72nd minute when McVittie was taken down in the penalty box.

After a notable four successful spot kicks against the Muirkirk side last month, midfielder McMillan took the penalty, but his shot went wide.

The opposition had a last chance at scoring in the 78th minute, but a hopeful shot hit the post and was cleared. Then Tommy Maitland was played in by Maxwell, but his 83rd minute effort was saved.

Girvan’s two Browns, Steven and Kristofer, gave impressive performances on their debuts and club chairman Tam McCreadie congratulated both on their high standard of play.

This weekend Girvan take on Dalmellington side Craigmark Burntonians away. Kick off is at 1.45pm.
