Late win secures semi final spot for Girvan

Girvan Youth hosted Ayr Juniors in the quarter final of the league cup at Carrick Academy on a cold windy Sunday.

Girvan, without captain Jamie Dorans (injured) and Ryan O’Neil (cup tied), had a rearranged formation again and got off to the perfect start with Rice floating in a lovely cross which was met by the head of David Barrett whose powerful header hit the back of the net.

Barrett then went on to hit a series of chances which were saved by the Ayr keeper.

Ayr juniors started to creep into the game forcing Ross to make saves, and just before half time were awarded a corner. Boons could only divert the excellently executed corner into his own net so it was 1-1 at half time.

The opening stages of the second half were quiet with both parties creating little chances.

Girvan brought on Allison, Kelly and Taylor and the fresh legs made an immediate impact with Taylor setting up Gracie who rifled home.

Taylor then turned his marker and slotted past the Ayr keeper.

After some really neat play in the middle of the park Gracie receiving the ball, skipped past two defenders, and blasted past the helpless Ayr keeper.

Girvan left it late but deserved the win. They will now face Crosshouse in the semi-final at Dam park, date to be confirmed.

Man of the match with an outstanding performance was David Barrett. Next Sunday Girvan are away to Galston on league duty.
