Lynn is top cycling performer

Ayr Roads Cycling Club/Harry Fairbairn BMW riders took part in the Scottish National Road Race Championship in Balfron on Sunday.

The sunshine and promise of hard and fast racing brought the crowds out and both the men’s and women’s races did not disappoint.

Lynne Wardrop put in the performance of the day for the club, mixing it with the top female riders in the country to finish in a superb 20th place.

The men were not so lucky with Mark Skilling and Kenny Armstrong involved in the same crash that finished their race. Paul Torrance put in a good performance in his first championship with the fast average speed of 25.4mph eventually taking its toll.

The first promotion of the season by Ayr Roads CC/Harry Fairbairn BMW took place on Thursday with the 17-mile Pennyglen Hilly Time Trial attracting a strong field of 33 riders.

Conditions more akin to winter cleared in time for the start with practically no wind promising fast times. Glasgow Couriers won for the third year running and this year it was the turn of Jamie Kennedy taking it from teammate and last year’s winner Jim Cusick by only five seconds, with Gordon Murdoch of Team Cyclelane in third.

The Bill Moore Memorial 10-mile Time Trial at Eglinton was on Sunday. Organised by Fullarton Wheelers, this was a fitting tribute to a Bill Moore, a former member of Ayr Roads. Toni McIntosh, 10th at Scottish National 10-mile Time Trial the previous week, missed first by only one second with a personal best of 25 minutes, 12 seconds. Neil Campbell continued fine form with 15th in a time of 22:57, with Brian Nicol and Robert Kelly not far behind in 20th (23:34) and 25th (23:49) respectively.

Completing a busy Sunday for Ayr Roads CC/Harry Fairbairn BMW seven members rode the 71-mile Solway Sportive on the rolling roads around Dumfries. First home was Paul McGhee, in 3:36mins, followed by Kenny McKay 3:43, David Fulton 3:45, and the remainder finishing after four hours.

Ayr Roads Cycling Club/Harry Fairbairn BMW Sunday club run departs Beresford Terrace each week at 9.30am. All welcome.
