The inaugural event of the Carrick Coastal rowing club took place around Culzean Castle on Saturday 21 September.

Called “The Exciseman’s Chase”, six teams launched from Maidens Harbour around 1pm.

After a fierce contest round the Ayrshire coast, Royal West Amateur Boat club were the winners coming round the eight kilometre circuit in 67 minutes.

Home team Carrick sprinted to second place in 72 minutes; with Cumbrae a very close third in 73 minutes; GalGael fourth in 75 minutes; Troon in fifth place in 83 minutes and Girvan newcomers to the sport were sixth in 94 minutes.

Their added incentive to row eight kilometres was to collect from their land-crew a bottle of smuggled spirits, get it into their boat, avoiding the Exciseman at Culzean, then return, as quickly as possible to Maidens with their contraband prize.

Matthew Riley, the Carrick Club’s Honorary President presented the Royal West winners with a silver Quaich and a fine bottle of A.D.Rattray’s single malt whisky. Matthew went on to congratulate all of the participating teams, expressing his hope that more young people would be encouraged to take up coastal rowing.

This inaugural event saw teams come from all over the west coast of Scotland to compete in an increasingly popular sport.

Girvan participant, David Wilson said, “It was a really enjoyable event. Despite the fact that some of our team were rowing for the very first time, we were up for the challenge.”

Henry Anderson, founder member of the Carrick Club, was very pleased with the turnout from River Clyde and Clyde Coast Clubs. He expressed his gratitude to all those involved in making the event such a success, especially to Fergus Forsyth for sterling work throughout the whole day, in and out of the water!
