Stoneykirk success in Wigtownshire

The Stoneykirk Curling Club rink of Ian Kirkpatrick, Norman Brown, Danny Hair and Robert Sharp won the Wigtownshire Rink Championships, sponsored by Steven Cronnie, Family Butcher, Wigtown and Alex Jack, Family Butcher, Stranraer, at Stranraer Ice Rink at the weekend after a resounding 7-3 victory in the final.

The winners downed the Castle Kennedy rink of Philip Wilson, Douglas McMillan, Colin Dalrymple and Beth Parker in a tight game. The teams were matching each other shot for shot and with the score at 4-3 to Stoneykirk after six ends, many spectators were thinking this tussle could go to an extra end. However, some excellent shot play from Stoneykirk left them lying three at the end of the seventh and with such quality curlers on form, the Castle Kennedy team knew there was no way back and shook hands.

The low road final between the two losing semi-finalists turned into a one-sided contest with Donald McColm’s Logan rink beating Dick Adams and his Wigtown team 7-2 after six ends.

At the presentation of prizes, Galloway Province vice-president Drew Paton congratulated both winners and runners-up for getting to the finals and asked Steven Cronnie, one of the new sponsors, to present the winners with the handsome trophy and miniature granite curling stones as mementoes. The runners up in the high road then received the John Agnew Salver from Steven and mini curling stones, and finally, the low road winners received the John Smith Salver from Steven and curling-themed china mugs. The Rhins O’ Gallowa’ President Donald McColm then gave a general vote of thanks, saying how nice it was to welcome new sponsor Steven Cronnie to the competition this year and he hoped this would be a long and rewarding association.
