Third event of season for cyclists

Ayr Roads CC/Harry Fairbairn BMW staged their third event of the season on Sunday – a 25 mile TT which was well organised by club member Kenny Armstrong.

The course started just outside Drybridge and headed down the dual carriageway to Loans where the riders turned to head back north to the Eglington roundabout in Irvine where the turn was taken to the Moorfield roundabout in Kilmarnock before the return to Drybridge. The strong turnout of a high quality field on a mild morning testified to the organisation of the event, which was superbly marshalled by numerous volunteers along the route. The fastest club member was Michael Robb in a mightily impressive time of 56:40.

Mark Skilling and Robert Kelly also put in great sub hour rides in times of 57:12 and 59:25 respectively. The event was won by Iain Grant of Dooley’s Cycles in an incredible time of 51:59. Other Ayr Roads times: Brian Nicol 1:02:10, Toni McIntosh (L) 1:04:52, Paul McGhee 1:05:21, Greg Templeton 1:05:39 and Lynne Wardrop (L) 1:08:30. The club wishes to thank GlaxoSmithKline for the use of their excellently equipped social club for the race HQ and to everyone who aided the undertaking of the race.

Five Ayr Roads CC riders were in action on the road on Sunday in the VC Glasgow South Road Race which took place on the A77 – Pilmuir – B769 – Clunch Road circuit. Although plenty of attacks went in during the race, it was hard for anyone to get away as the wind lashed across the riders. The race split with around a mile to go on the approach to the finish at Whitelee Windfarm as a result of a crash which reduced the leading group. Gary Maher continued his excellent recent form, following up a win last week in East Kilbride with a superb 5th place finish in the energy zapping uphill sprint finish. David Torrance was the next Ayr rider home, followed by Alastair McGibbon and Paul Torrance. The experience gained from the race was invaluable and can be put to good use in future events. Adam Stevens also started the race but didn’t finish the course.

Toni McIntosh and Lynne Wardrop flew the flag for the club on Saturday at the Danny Boyle Memorial 10 mile TT on the West Ferry course, Renfrewshire. Both ladies achieved impressive times, with Toni clocking 24:03 and Lynne 24:20.
