A MAJOR funding boost will allow an essential rural bus service in Carrick to continue.
Strathclyde Passenger Transport has agreed to spend over £400,000 to keep the Carrick MyBus rural service 700 running across South Ayrshire until 2016.
The MyBus rural is a service provided by SPT for people who have difficulty using public transport as a result of disability or age, and also provides transport links to areas with limited or no public transport.
Operations committee chair, Denis McKenna, said: “Like many other local government agencies and councils, SPT is facing severe financial problems right now but we are determind to protect our vital demand responsive services.”
Under new contract arrangements, SPT has found savings of £9,610 per annum on the contract price by supplying the vehicle for lease by the bus operator.
Mr McKenna added: “These services are vital to many people and play an essential part in public transport provision in Strathclyde. They are there to make sure that people who difficulty using public transport are not left stranded.”
