Youth team win after initial scare

Girvan travelled up to Stevenson to take on the struggling TASS Saltire in the Supplementary Cup on what turned out to be a lovely mild March morning. TASS, sitting bottom of the league, were up for a good hard battle and their midfield took control of the game right from the start.

But it was Girvan who broke the deadlock against the run of play. Storrie galloped up the wing and played a neat return pass with Dorans before rifling into the net.

Then Kelly stabbed home a Rice corner to make it two. And they scored a third before the interval through a Dorans free-kick.

TASS got back into the game shortly after the interval with two goals to set up a very nervy game for Girvan,

But Storrie gave them some breathing space with a fourth goal and, although TASS brought the score back to 4-3, the visitors held on for the points.

Girvan were very lucky to get the win to take them into the next round of the cup.

Man of the match with another commanding performance was Jack Smith, who, along with Jamie Dorans, were selected to play in the Ayrshire select team – a fantastic achievement for both boys and for Girvan.

Next week’s fixtures are not on the website yet but Girvan Youth Girls start their league campaign with a home game against Kilwinning Reds, who are unbeaten so a very tough start for them and we wish them all the best.

Girvan squad: Gillespie, Allison, Irvine, J Smith, Storrie, Rice, McCulloch, Hamilton, Kelly, Doran, Taylor, Park, Barrett & T Smith.

lGirvan Academy’s under 14s lost 4-3 to Prestwick Academy this week.
