Amateur theatre group Ayr Fort Players present their quirky, poignant and hilarious theatrical production of the hit 2003 film Calendar Girls at Ayr Gaiety this week.

Based on the Miramax movie by Juliette Townhill and Tim Firth, the comedy drama is based on the true story of a group of women who produced a nude calendar to raise money for Leukaemia Research under the auspices of the Women’s Institutes in April 1999.

The story begins when Annie’s husband John dies from leukaemia and her close friend Chris, anxious to purchase a comfortable sofa for the hospital where he was treated, hits upon the fundraising idea of printing a calendar featuring members of a Yorkshire Women’s Institute discreetly posing nude while engaged in everyday activities, such as baking and knitting.

After initial doubt, ten women join the project and soon the lives of the ‘Calendar Girls’ are transformed forever.

The show runs from today (Wednesday) until Saturday, March 23 at 7.30pm.
