Carrick youngsters are among school children across Scotland being encouraged to don their chef’s hat and come up with an inventive recipe showcasing the versatility of seafood.

Argyll-based Inverawe Smokehouses, in partnership with Seafood Scotland’s Seafood in Schools programme, are running their recipe competition to encourage youngsters to explore the many ways they can enjoy seafood.

Any children aged between 5 and 16 years can enter the competition to win £50 of Amazon vouchers, with one primary and one secondary school from each of Seafood Scotland’s four regions (which cover all 32 Scottish Local Authority areas) being picked as winner by a panel of judges.

“We’re always keen to promote the importance of health, a balanced diet and how fish can be enjoyed as part of that,” said Rosie Campbell-Preston, owner of Inverawe. “Last year we ran a similar competition and had more than 500 recipes sent in from children the length and breadth of Scotland, the standard of which was outstanding.

“But this year, with the help of Seafood in Schools, we’re hoping the bar will be raised and the children will come up with some even more inventive ways of enjoying all types of seafood – be it posh fish finger sandwiches, their own take on a seafood salad or even a sushi-inspired dish.”

Seafood in Schools is a project from Seafood Scotland that aims to teach children about seafood; where it comes from, how it reaches our plates, and why eating seafood is good for us.

Nicki Holmyard, Seafood in Schools’ project manager said it is a great opportunity to help youngsters understand the benefits of fish and seafood in their diets.

“For some children, their first experience of eating fish or shellfish is when our coordinators visit their schools, and once they are tempted they never look back,” she said. “This competition is a great way to get children experimenting with seafood, and adapting recipes to suit them.”

Anyone wanting to enter the competition can submit their entry by emailing or posting their entry to Inverawe Competition, The BIG Partnership, 5 Park Circus Place, Glasgow, G3 6AH. The closing date for all entries is November 30.
