Girvan and district flower club chairwoman Margaret Findlay welcomed everyone to the club’s Annual Open Night held in the Academy Theatre on Wednesday.
She then introduced Demonstrator Don Billington from Liverpool, his Demonstration entitled “Christmas Grotto” could so easily have been named “Christmas Great Oh!”
It was quite obvious to the large audience present why Don is a much acclaimed Demonstrator, Gardener and Gold Medal Winner at Chelsea.
Don has three national collections of the Bromeliad Species, and his love of gardening shone through as he encouraged the audience to identify the plant material and flowers in his designs by their scientific names, this was done with great Liverpudlian wit and fun.
The stage was a riot of colour with Orchidaceae Dendrobium “Esther” Ilex Verticillata, Andraeanum Anthurium, 24 Carat Cabbages! to name but a few. Overall his Demonstration was most informative, stylish, humorous and delighted everyone, especially the lucky raffle winners. Vice Chairperson Liz Gregg gave a most worthwhile vote of thanks, Margaret then thanked everyone for supporting the club, before inviting them to move through to the Cafeteria for refreshments. This was the Clubs last event of 2013 but look forward to welcoming members and visitors to the Community Centre on Wednesday 22nd January when Pauline Todd from Newton Stewart will lead the 2014 programme off.
