Flynn’s Boatyard in Girvan, South Ayrshire, has been voted Best Bar of 2014 by readers of the Carrick Gazette.
The win is a welcome boost to the Houston Family, who took on the bar as a Punch Taverns Partner last year, relaunching the business with a new look, name and offer.
They oversaw a £200,000 reinvestment in the premises in 2014. The bar reopened in November, after closing for two months for a complete refit inside and out.
The refurbished Flynn’s Boatyard, with a new seafaring theme, makes the most of the bar’s exceptional location right on the harbour. It boasts an impressive beer garden, with stunning views.
With the Houston family at the wheel – Mark, his mum Jane, and his sister-in-law Donna are also key to the pub’s success – the pub is successfully attracting locals and passers-by, as well benefiting from the seasonal tourist trade.
As experienced publicans, with other pubs in the area, the family were confident about introducing the new offer that has broadened the pub’s appeal. With a 50:50 split of sales on food and beverages, Flynn’s Boatyard now has locally produced food on offer throughout the day, while the bar serves a good range of drinks which suit everybody’s budget!
The pub also draws people in with plenty of live entertainment. It serves up DJs, a popular Sunday talent competition, regular quiz nights and Sky Sports, as well as providing space for private dining and functions.
Jane said: “The refurbishment was about giving the Girvan community somewhere nice to eat and drink. We think this must be their way of saying thank you, and giving the pub the thumbs up.
Iain Thomson of Punch Taverns said: “This is a really well-deserved win for Mark and his family. We shared their vision for Flynn’s Boatyard right from the start.”
