When American billionaire Donald Trump emerged as the person who had completed a takeover of the renowned Turnberry Resort, there were understandably some reservations.
Members and locals in Carrick knew all about his problems in the Aberdeen area and wondered just what exactly he was planning with The Open Championship venue.
Over the last year, through meticulous planning and hard work Trump and his team including his son Eric in particular have ensured that it is now very much a tiny minority who are against his plans.
The vast majority of people are hugely supportive of the huge investment Trump is piling into Trump Turnberry and now golfers are revelling in the excitement of the planned changes to the Ailsa Championship course.
In conjunction with renowned architect Martin Ebert, Trump has come up with plans that will make this already world class venue even better for the game’s top players the next time The Open comes.
He has recognised that the course should take full advantage of its location and the stretch of holes from the fourth to the eleventh will arguably be the greatest ocean style course anywhere on the planet.
Centrepiece to that will be the 9th hole being remodelled as a par 3. That is something that should have happened years ago but it has taken Trump’s vision to turn it into a reality by the time the course will be completed by June 2015. Coupled with the halfway house that is planned for the iconic Turnberry lighthouse, people from all over will be waxing lyrical about Turnberry’s 9th.
The new ballroom and function suites that have opened in the hotel are also truly magnificent and will make Trump Turnberry the place to be for weddings, functions and conferences.
Turnberry was crying out for somebody with Trump’s wealth to invest in it. Now we are seeing the results.
