This Saturday and Sunday at eight o’clock on ITV sees the return of the singing competition which continues to make news despite the fact that it originally appeared on our screens back in 2004!
Viewers of the X Factor will notice a few changes this year. Dermot O’Leary, the host of the series for most of its time was replaced last year by Olly Murs and Caroline Flack.
However for various reasons it was decided that Dermot was such an integral part of the show that he – and his dancing – have been asked to return for this new series. Last year Louis Walsh, who had been the only judge throughout all the preceding seasons, was replaced with Nick Grimshaw. Again Louis’ unique contributions to the show were much missed and so he too will be back again on the judging panel this year. In fact the only Judge from last year who will be returning will be Simon Cowell himself. Simon and Louis will be joined by two other former Judges - Sharon Osbourne and Nicole Scherzinger.
It has always seemed that unlike Strictly Come Dancing, the X Factor’s great rival, the Judges on X Factor, have often tended to overshadow the contestants. As before the show will start with the auditions of contestants of various abilities.
However this year it will revert back to doing it through the ‘room auditions.’ It will be interesting to see if with these various changes, whether or not this year’s version of the show will regain some of the huge audiences that it has had in the past.
However it does seem to me that although the format of the show is being revised yet again, that the show is looking more to its past than to its future.
